A Better Funnel Cannot Rescue a Confused Offer
Before optimising the journey, check the destination. Most funnel leaks are offer leaks measured downstream.
Funnel optimisation is seductive because it is measurable. Move a button, watch a percentage. But a funnel is a pipe, and a pipe can only deliver what is poured into it. Pour in a confused offer and the funnel will efficiently distribute confusion.
How offer confusion shows up as funnel data
High add-to-cart with high checkout abandonment? Often a pricing-surprise problem, not a checkout-UX problem. Strong traffic with weak opt-ins? Often a who-is-this-for problem. Great trial signups with brutal churn? The offer promised something the product delivers differently. The dashboard reports these as funnel stages. The cause sits upstream, in the offer.
The dashboard shows where people leave. It rarely shows why.
The order of operations
First, the offer: what exactly does the customer get, at what price, with what risk removed? Second, the message: can a stranger repeat it back after one read? Third, only third, the funnel mechanics. Run in this order, the mechanical work gets easier, because every test is measuring a proposition that deserves to win.
Growth teams sometimes resist this sequence because offer work feels like someone else's department. It is all one business; the funnel just happens to be where the disagreements become visible. So review the funnel with whoever owns the offer in the room, and read every drop-off as a question about the promise before you treat it as a question about the page.
